Heinous Crimes On Women OF Manipur
By: Prof. Neelam Mahajan Singh
☆ Manipur is in the grip of caste violence these days. Tension has spread in the hilly areas of Manipur over a video in which two women are being paraded naked. According to the report, this video is of May 4, 2023. While both the women belong to the 'Kuki' community. The men who are parading the women naked are from the 'Meitai' community. Kuki's are Christians and Meitai's are Hindus. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said, "My heart is filled with pain and anger today. What happened to the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven. I ask all Chief Ministers to strengthen law and order. Take strict steps to protect our mothers and sisters. Law and order and respect of our sisters is a priority in any corner of India or in any state, above political debates". Chief Justice of The Supreme Court of India, Justice Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud, himself took suo-motto cognizance of the incident and sought a report from the Director General of Police and Chief Secretary of Manipur. The SHO who wrote FIR in Manipur says, "Yes, gangrape has happened". The victim said, 'We were in the police car. We thought thst the police would save us. A crowd of Meitei boys surrounded the car. They took us off and started touching our body parts, here and there'. They said, "If you want to live, then take off your clothes. We looked at the policemen for help, they turned away. Then we took off our clothes". This is what the 21 year old victim has to say. This is the story of that girl, whom you must have seen in the viral video that went viral from Manipur, on 19th July. There is also a 42 years old woman in that video. Her clothes were also taken off. She says, 'He said - if you don't take off your clothes, you will die. I took off my clothes to save myself. They started beating me, kept touching my body. I was not raped'. Violence broke out in Manipur on 3rd May and this video is from 4th May.
During the investigation of the video that went viral, apart from the victim women, the policeman who had first filed the complaint on May 18 was also talked to. The brother who came to save them was beaten to death by the mob. The SHO 'Inspector Lungthang' posted at 'Saikul Police Station' is the main person who lodged the first complaint in the matter. A Zero FIR of the case was registered on May 18, 2023. In this, 800 to 1000 people associated with Meitei organizations were made accused. Lungthang further states that when the victim met him, she was very scared. Lunthang said that he first filed a zero FIR and then transferred the case to Nangpok Sekmai police station, where the incident took place. A report has been registered in this case under IPC sections 302 (murder), 354 (molestation and indecency with woman), 376 (rape), 326 (causing grievous hurt). This FIR was registered against Meitei youth organizations. Thousands of articles written over the years were written by my pen. Police has an important role in women's safety. The society is divided on the basis of religion and caste. This has hollowed the safety of women. What happened 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' campaign? Controlling crimes against women, the weak mentality of our Manuwadi male dominated society and government's taking it lightly, is shameful for India. On the one hand considering we worship women as goddess and on the other hand raping women naked is a proof of a poisonous mentality. Shame on our civilized modern society!
